GRAYSON, Ky. — Two Kentucky Christian University faculty members have been selected to present at the Appalachian College Association’s Summit 2026, scheduled for September 23–25 in Asheville, North Carolina.
Dr. Joanna Yates, assistant professor of reading, and Dr. Brittany Bryant, assistant professor of English, will lead a session titled “Known and Valued: Practical Strategies for Cultivating Meaningful Student Connection in Higher Education.”
Their presentation will explore practical ways faculty members and institutions can create learning environments in which students feel recognized, supported and connected. The session will offer strategies educators can use to develop stronger relationships with students and foster a greater sense of belonging—important elements in student engagement, achievement and persistence.
“Students are more likely to engage and persevere when they know someone at their institution recognizes them as an individual and genuinely cares about their success,” Yates said. “Our goal is to provide educators with practical strategies they can take back to their campuses and begin using immediately.”
The presentation reflects the commitment Yates and Bryant share to student-centered teaching and meaningful faculty-student relationships.
“Connection does not always require a major new program or initiative,” Bryant said. “Often, it begins with intentional practices that communicate to students that they are known, valued and capable of succeeding.”
Yates joined the KCU faculty in 2021. She holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from Morehead State University and brings extensive experience in literacy, student learning and teacher preparation to her work at KCU.
Bryant joined the KCU faculty in 2023. She holds degrees from Ohio University, Spalding University, Cedarville University and the University of the Cumberlands. Her doctoral research examined how adult-learning principles, online course design and institutional practices influence student engagement and achievement.

Hosted by the Appalachian College Association, the annual Summit brings together faculty members, administrators and other higher-education professionals from colleges and universities throughout the Appalachian region to share research, effective practices and innovative approaches to serving students.
