Counseling Psychology

Mission Statement

The mission of the Counseling Psychology program is to equip students with the foundation of biblical/theological knowledge and the understanding of counseling practice essential to service in the Church and the community as an entry level human service worker and to provide them with prerequisites for graduate study in counseling.

Rationale

A Bachelor of Science degree in Counseling Psychology equips students for entry-level human service positions in local congregations, Christian social service programs, and community agencies. This program emphasizes a growing recognition that the integration of the resources, training, and insights available from Bible/ministries/theology and from psychology in an interdisciplinary endeavor provides graduates with meaningful and effective strategies for addressing human problems. A major in Counseling Psychology would be appropriate for students who intend to enter graduate programs in clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, or social work.

Program Goals for Major in Counseling Psychology

  • To provide students with the knowledge, values, and skills necessary for an entry-level human service positions.
  • To prepare students for graduate study in counseling.
  • To help students integrate biblical/theological issues with counseling theory and practice.
  • To guide students in the development of an understanding and appreciation of the many factors which contribute to human diversity as it applies to a theory and practice of counseling which is distinctively Christian.

As part of the training, each graduate completes an internship in an agency with expectations appropriate to bachelor level training of a student for entry level human service positions. Such experiences add an important dimension to the student's application for entry-level positions following graduation and to one's application to top-rated graduate programs.

There is an open admission policy for this program of study. However, give careful attention to the Graduation Requirements listed in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Graduate School

Internship opportunities assist students in building a base of experience with people that will assist their entry into Graduate School.

Graduates have gone on to excellent Graduate Schools. Examples include: Loyola, Fuller Theological Seminary, Abilene Christian University, University of Rhode Island, and the University of Tennessee.

Graduates of KCU's Counseling Psychology program have been admitted directly into both Master's and Doctorate level programs.
