Ron Arnett Honored for 500th Career Win

During KCU's 2010 Basketball Homecoming, Lady Knights head coach Ron Arnett was honored with a surprise presentation of a plaque commemorating his 500th win. He was also presented with a basketball with autograph's of this year's team members. The following is a portion of what was shared with the large crowd on hand:

"The game on November 15th, 1991 seemed like just another women's college basketball game. The Lady Knights took the floor against Philadelphia College of the Bible, and they walked away with a 47-42 win. That was win #1 for new Lady Knights head coach Ron Arnett. Since that November date in 1991, a lot has happened. Plenty of ups and downs to be sure, but mostly smooth sailing for the Lady Knights basketball program. Under Ron Arnett's direction, the Lady Knights have won 11 national championships (‘95, ‘96, ‘97, ‘98, ‘00, ‘03, ‘04, ‘05, ‘07, ‘08, and ‘09. Several of the ladies on the court tonight have been a part of at least one of those national championships.

As for Regional Championships, Ron Arnett's teams have never lost one. 18 regional championships to date, beginning with that ‘91-‘92 season. The Lady Knights have also been the national runner-up four times under Arnett's direction. He is currently 502-140 (78%) in his 19 seasons as head coach, Coach Arnett is an astounding 339-11 (97%) against NCCAA II opponents.

This past January 26th, Ron and the Lady Knights hosted the team from Midway College. Though there wasn't a lot of fanfare, lurking in the archives of statistics the truth was clear. The 72-56 win that night over Midway College was a unique milestone in the world of coaching that not many people achieve – Win number 500! So tonight, we want to celebrate this important benchmark in Coach Arnett's career, and the tremendous standard of excellence that Ron has brought not just to the basketball court, but to Kentucky Christian University.

Congratulations, Coach Arnett on Win # 500!"

Named as 2nd Team All Americans were senior Ashley Baldwin and sophomore Autumn Carter. Recognized as Scholar Athletes were seniors Ashley Baldwin, Kelli Jo Young, Heather Stacey and junior Meredith Reed.
  • 03/16/2010 - Lady Knights Win 13th National Championship
Philadelphia, PA - Entering the NCCAA II National Tournament as the Number 1 seed is nothing new for the KCU Lady Knights. For the 8th straight year the team from Grayson, KY had secured the top seed in the Tournament.
"The only advantage of being the top seed is only having to pack one uniform." That's the way Coach Ron Arnett summed up the situation. Everyone wants to knock us off. "The other teams want to see us beaten early and that's part of the game. We don't take exception to that, we are inspired by it", said Arnett. And for the 4th straight year that inspiration ended with a National Championship. KCU started off on Thursday by defeating North Central University, from Minneapolis, MN, 66-48. Sophomore Autumn Carter and Junior Meredith Reed led the way with 12 points each. The semi-final game brought on Maranatha Baptist Bible College from Watertown, WI. KCU defeated Maranatha last year in the semi-finals as well. The final score of 73-54 showed the experience of KCU and the youth of Maranatha as they started 4 freshmen. "Coach Morrison has an outstanding group of young players. They will be back and they will be better next time", according to Arnett. Senior Kristin Hecht led the way with 16 points and sophomore Ashley Savage scored a career high 14 off the bench. That victory set up the Championship game against Mideast Region rival Ohio Christian University. This was the first time two teams from the same region have played for the National Championship. OCU had beaten the host team Philadelphia Biblical University and the #2 seed, Southwestern Christian University to get to the final game for the first time ever. KCU prevailed 72-70 in a very closely contested matchup. Hecht led the way for KCU with 18 points and sophomore Tara Weddle added 15 while junior Stpeh Kenley had 12. The game winning basket was scored by Meredith Reed on an out-of-bounds play 94 feet from the basket. Reed scored the final 7 points of the game for KCU. The win is the 13th overall for the Lady Knights and the 12th for Coach Ron Arnett in his 19 years of coaching.
  • 03/05/2010 - Hecht Mideast Region MVP
Knoxville, TN - Senior forward Kristin Hecht was named the Mideast Region Most Valuable Player this past Saturday as she posted her career high game with 32 points in the region championship game. Hecht was named an NCCAA II First Team All American last year and was the 2009 NCCAA II Tournament MVP. Joining Hecht on the All Region Team were Brenda Carter and Danyel Butte from Ohio Christian University, and Autumn Carter and Ashley Baldwin from KCU. This was the second year in a row that Hecht made the All Region Team.

It was also announced on Monday that KCU will be the #1 seed in the National Tournament for the 4th year in a row. Ohio Christian University has received the one at-large bid, made available when Philadelphia Biblical University, host of the National Tournament, defeated Valley Forge on a last second shot. KCU plays at 6:00 on Thursday and OCU will play in the 8:00 game vs Philadelphia Biblical.
  • 03/05/2010 - Lady Knights Capture 26th Straight Region Title
Knoxville, TN - For the 26th consecutive year the KCU Lady Knights Basketball Team has captured the Region WBB banner. The most recent win came against #2 seed Ohio Christian on Saturday, February 27th. The final score of 76-70 indicates the game was close at the end, but it was a game of two halves. KCU managed to shoot over 60% in the first half and built a 21 point lead with 5 seconds remaining. With the ball in her hands at 27 feet OCU's Schilling launched a shot at the buzzer. It hit the backboard then the rim and bounced up in the air and through the net to leave the halftime score at 44-26. That small boost gave OCU the momentum to come out in the second half and score the first 9 points of the half. From there it was a battle. KCU alternated between turning the ball over and hitting shots, shooting 65% in the first half and 50% in the second, finishing the game at 29-49, 59%. They also turned the ball over 29 times as OCU pressed full court for much of the game. Coach Arnett had this to say after the game was over, "I tried to get our kids to not think about the success of the first half, OCU is too good for that. I knew they would come back and they did. Our defense lost its intensity and our shooting was flat early in the second half. When we finally snapped out of it there was a fight to be won. Fortunately, we hit some bit shots and pulled out another win." Senior Kristin Hecht led the way for the Lady Knights with 32 points and 9 rebounds. Danyle Butte let OCU with 17 points. KCU will advance to the NCCAA II National Tournament where they are seeking their fourth straight championship.
  • 02/05/2010 - KCU Lady Knights Lose to Asbury
Lusby Center - In a game that could have gone either way the KCU Lady Knights were beaten Thursday night by the Asbury College Eagles. Asbury came into the game with determination and played to win from the beginning. Close the entire way, Asbury led by 5 at half and as the game neared its end the lead went back and forth. After KCU took a 58-57 lead with 3 minutes remaining Asbury's Downs hit a huge 3 at the 1:58 mark to retake the lead. Autumn Carter answered with a basket at 1:40 to give KCU the lead back but down the stretch KCU was outscored 6-0 for the final 56-50 margain. Jr Meredith Reed led KCU in scoring with 12 while sophomore Autumn Carter added 11. KCU was ice cold the first half as they shot 25% from the floor but rebounded with a 59% mark in the second half to finish at 40% for the game. Asbury also shot 40% for the game but hit 8 three pointers to only 1 for KCU. Rebounding and turnovers were pretty much even as was the game throughout. The loss dropped KCU to 14-5 on the season. "The 9 day layoff really hurt us tonight," was the way Coach Ron Arnett reacted to the game. "We have been practicing hard but losing the 2 tough games to Berea and UVa Wise really took us out of our rhythm and almost wiped out the momentum we had built up over the past couple weeks." KCU returns to action at Ohio Christian on Tuesday evening.
  • 01/27/2010 - Lady Knights Move Past Midway
Lusby Center - The loss to Midway in November was a long time back but it was still on the mind of Coach Ron Arnett as his Lady Knight team hosted Midwas College Tuesday night. "Down there they played as well as I expected and we did not respond well enough to win a close game. We talked about what it takes to beat a good team and then worked very hard to get to the point we could do what was necessary. Tonight that hard work and preparation paid off." Both teams played a rugged first half and KCU led 33-31 after jumping out to a quick lead. Coach Arnett lauded second year coach Karley Mohler, "Coach Mohler wants her team to do well and she wants them to do things the right way. I really appreciate her efforts and attitude with her team." Her team plays hard and they gave us all we could handle in the first half. Our shooting in the second half was the difference." KCU shot 55% for the game, 58% in the second half, 33-60 overall. Midway made 13-15 free throws to remain close throughout. The 72-56 final margain was the largest of the game. KCU moves to 14-4 while Midway fell to 6-11 on the season. "Midway has had a very difficult schedule this year," said Arnett. "We play a tough schedule but theirs is much tougher this year." Senior All American Kristin Hecht led KCU with 26 points and 15 rebounds. "Hecht was phenomenal tonight," said Arnett. "She played the way your leading scorer and rebounder needs to play in a tough game." Junior Meredith Reed also had an outstanding game with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. "With Hecht and Meredith playing the way they played tonight we are going to win some games," according to Arnett. Sophomores Autumn Carter and Tara Weddle added 9 & 8 points respectively. Sr point guard Ashley Baldwin had 6 assists and only 1 turnover. KCU had 11 turnovers for the game compared to 13 for Midway.
  • 01/26/2010 - HOMECOMING GAME FEB 19TH
Lusby Center - Head Coach Ron Arnett has announced that the Homecoming Game scheduled on Friday, February 19th, will be played. "When Johnson Bible had to drop their WBB schedule it put us in a difficult situation. I certainly understand the circumstances but it really fouled us up with Homecoming and Sr. Night," according to Arnett. "Fortunately, Wright Patterson AFB and their Women's team were willing to come here for a game at the last minute." The Women's Homecoming Game will tip at 6:00 with Sr Night recognition for the four Lady Knight seniors.
  • 01/20/2010 - Lady Knights Reverse CCU Outcome
Cincinnati - "From the beginning I could tell that this game would not be a repeat of our loss to Cincinnati at our place in December. The intensity was better and the mental preparation was much better. All that went together to get us a very nice win against a very good team." That's what Coach Arnett had to say about the CCU game on Tuesday night. "I am more pleased with this team right now that at any time in the season," continued Arnett. "They are practicing and playing like it is heading for Tournament Time. That is our goal every year. We want to improve as it gets close to that most important time of the season." Sr Kristin Hecht again led the way for KCU as she had 15 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore Autumn Carter came off the bench and aded 13, while Tara Weddle had 9 and freshman Kaycee Denton chipped in with 8. "We played 13 players and went deep into our bench. Two freshmen played several minutes and responded very well. Soph Abby Evans started her first ever game and gave the team energy and speed with defensive pressure inside. The young kids seem to be finally ready to play basketball," said Arnett.

For the game KCU shot 39% on 24-61 shooting compared to CCU shooting 19-61 from the floor. Rebounds were about even with KCU coming out on top 42-37. KCU had 16 turnovers and CCU had 24. The win moves KCU to 13-4 on the season as they remain the number 1 ranked team in NCCAA II Women's Basketball.
  • 01/15/2010 - Lady Knights Have 2 Games Cancelled
Lusby Center - KCU Women's Basketball Coach Ron Arnett has been informed that the two games with Johnson Bible College have been cancelled due to JBC not having a team second semester. Coach Arnett made this comment, "Obviously we are saddened to hear that Johnson Bible has lost their team. The fact that our home game with them was designated as Homecoming adds an additional burden to our program. I am working to find another game but at this late date it might be very difficult to accomplish." Announcements concerning the Homecoming schedule will be posted as soon as possible.
  • 01/13/2010 - Lady Knights Win 4th In A Row
Lusby Center - After an extended Christmas break the KCU Lady Knights have hit the hardwood with winning on their mind. A very successful trip to central Ohio netted three wins as the Lady Knights knocked of Philadelphia Biblical University on Jan 7th, 64-26. Defense was the key as PBU could score only 10 baskets during the game. Sr Kristin Hecht led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The following night KCU defeated Lancaster Bible College 83-37 as the defensive effort was again the key of the game. Hecht was again big in the win with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the second straight night. On Saturday KCU met World Harvest Bible College for the first time ever. The Lady Knights seemed tired as they won 57-39. Shooting struggled but the defense was consistent. Autumn Carter scored 9 to lead KCU with Hecht adding 8.

Things really heated up on Tuesday night as Ohio Christian invaded Lusby Center. With a 14-2 record the Ohio team seemed on a mission as they battled for 40 minutes. KCU built up an early lead and stretched it to 49-32 at half as both teams shot the ball well. KCU shot 65% while OCU hit 52% from the floor. The second half was not as good for KCU as OCU fought back and took a 2 point lead with 5:20 remaining at 61-59. KCU had a stretch of almost 5 minutes without scoring. The Lady Knights then put on a spurt and finished with a 14-4 run to win 73-65. Coach Arnett had this to say after the game, "OCU was ready to play tonight. Coach Wray has done an outstanding job with her team and they knew what had to be done. They brought several fans and they were very loud. Our kids watched them come back and finally were able to regain control of the game. OCU really played well after we had an outstanding first half." 6-7 free throws down the stretch sealed the win. Sr Kristin Hecht again led the way with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomores Autumn Carter and Tara Weddle added 14 in the win. KCU won the battle of the boards 35-30 and KCU won the TO battle 12-16. OCU shot 46% for the game while KCU finished at 48%. OCU stands at 14-3 while KCU improved to 12-4 for the season.

Coaching Staff

Picture of Coach Ron Arnett

Head Coach Ron Arnett

Head Coach Ron Arnett begins his 19th year at the helm of the KCU Lady Knights. During those 18 seasons his teams have a record of 484-133, an amazing 330-10 against NCCAA II teams. The 2009 NCCAA Championship was his team's 11th during his leadership tenure. The team's 154-123 record against scholarship level teams is 55%. So, what's left to motivate him as another season approaches? "I just enjoy seeing our kids improve from that first open gym up through the National Tournament. We don't always win but we always try. We have had some really good seasons and God has blessed us with outstanding young ladies who want to play college basketball in a Christian environment. I can't wait to see what happens this season." Arnett has been named the NCCAA National Coach Of The Year 6 times. No other coach has won the award more than three times. Banners and trophies decorate the gym and Arnett's office. But if you look closely you will see more than awards. "The Team Pictures are my favorite things in the office", says Arnett. "I look at them often just to be reminded of the great kids we have had here. There are some tremendous memories in those pictures. Kids have been changed while they were here. Some have given their lives to the Lord, others have dedicated themselves to full-time ministry and most all have grown in their walk with their Savior. That is what is most important. The places we have been and the things we have seen make an old coach smile when I think of them." This year should be no exception as the Lady Knights work hard to reach their individual and team goals.

Assistant Coash Aimie Walker

Beside Arnett on the bench again this year will be daughter Aimie Walker. Aimie played on the first National Championship team in 1989 and has been around for the last nine years as Assistant Coach. Aimie is a math professor at the University and looks forward to the rewards of that. She and her husband, Earl, have three sons and reside in Grayson. "This year is going to be exceptionally exciting for me because I will continue to be able to be more involved with the players off the court. This job is not just about basketball. It is about fostering young women in their journey with the Lord. It is such a blessing to me to see these ladies grow during the season. Their witness on and off the court is a true showing of their character. It's also lots of fun as we work on math problems on the bus during road trips. It's like a traveling math-lab. I expect our team to be very athletic this season. Though we will be younger and less experienced than last year I think we can be very successful as the younger players develop and the leaders step up to make their presence felt by all. I can't wait to get started to see what will happen this year." The Walker family will also be represented by the three sons who are present at all home games and many contests on the road. Tyler, Ryan and Seth can be seen scooping up basketballs at practices and at home games. "For the boys to be involved with us makes it a real family situation. That's just another reason for me to be involved," says Walker. Coach Walker and her family are very involved at the Gregoryville Christian Church where Aimie serves as President of the Ladies Circle and Earl is a Deacon.

Junior Varsity Coach Andrea Kelley

Completing the coaching staff again this year as Junior Varsity Coach will be Andrea Kelley . Andrea played her high school basketball at East Carter High, graduating in 1998, and then went on to Alice Lloyd College where she started for three years. "Having another former player on our staff will help in many ways. Andrea was a real competitor at Alice Lloyd and she always played well against us. She understands our program better than most and is going to be an asset for both Aimie and me," says Arnett. "Her knowledge of the game and youthful exuberance will both be very positive for us." Kelley had this to say, "I am very excited for my third year as JV coach. When Coach Arnett asked me if I would like to guide the JV program it didn't take me long to answer. I can't wait to get started again and get to know the recruits." At Alice Lloyd Andrea was a starter for three years and finished in the top 10 in both rebounding and blocked shots in the Appalachian Conference. She also led her team in steals and blocked shots. Assistant JV Coach Kristin Clark

Joining the coaching staff this season is former player Kristin Clark. Kristin played 2 years for the Lady Knights after a freshman redshirt season due to a knee injury. Her last season was interrupted with a second knee surgery so she has donned the coaching attire for the 2009-10 season. Kristin graduated from Lewis County High School in 2005 and will finish her Counseling Psychology degree in December. Known as an accurate 3 point shooter during her playing days Kristin will be assisting Coach Kelley with the younger players and on the bench for JV games. Her calm demeanor and instinct for the game will be a valuable asset to the JV program.
